Galicia This north-western region of Spain has a rich Celtic tradition. The Capital Santiago de Compostela is one of Spain’s most historic cities. In medieval times pilgrimages would treck to this city said to be the third most important pilgrimage.

Asturias Oviedo is home of the Pre-Romanesque jewels of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Maria de Naranco.

Basque Region Bilbao has survived many battles in its eventful past. Ancient churches and collections of art make this area a worthwhile destination to visit.

Castille y Leon Segoria is famed for its fairytale castle and has many interesting Roman sights. Toledo is reached by crossing a stone bridge across the River Tagus and the capital Leon is a vibrant city rich in history.

Navarra Pamplona host the ‘Running of the bulls’ one of the most famous events in all the country.

Andalusia The homeland of Picasso. Murillo and Valazquez has a wealth of paintings, sculptures, jewels and remains in its museums, palaces and cathedrals which are both elaborate and treasured. It’s architecture is a variety of Baroque, Islamic and Renaissance. Granada and Seville are two cities steeped in Spanish culture and worth devoting some time to visit.

Bullfighting has a deep – rooted tradition and bull fights are held in the numerous bullrings throughout the year. Big towns throughout the region often stage a bullfight on Sundays and are big business. A plaza de toros (bullring) holds up to 25,000 spectators who pay more for sitting near the front or in the shade! The faint-hearted should be warned that a bullfight will nearly always end with the killing of a bull. Worth a visit in the El Museo Municipal Tourino in Gaucin where you can take a walk round the bullring itself.

Ibiza The 1950’s saw an influx of artists attracted to the island. This is evident at the Art Gallery Alhadros, Barrau Museum and Art Gallery Can Daifa.

The Cathedral Museum at Eivisso contains numerous liturgy related objects, some dating back to the 14th Century.

Majorca Almudaina Palace, the national museum in Palma has an ancient fort and was once the home of the King of Catalonia – Aragon. The island has other castles in Alaro, Capdepera and a Historical Manor House in Palma.

Menorca A musical and artistic history. A sample of these can be found at the Museu de Menorca in Mao.

Ciutadella is also worth visiting for its numerous museums and theatres.
